What is a DNS A record?

A DNS A (Address) record is the basic DNS row that points a hostname at an IPv4 address—the 32-bit number computers use to find each other on the network. www.example.com and example.com can each have their own A records. AAAA is the IPv6 twin. Without an A (or a working alias that yields one), browsers cannot find the site even if SPF, DKIM, and SSL still look fine.

How A records work (name → IP)

When someone types a hostname, resolvers ask for A (and often AAAA). The answer is one or more IPv4 addresses—your web host, CDN edge, or load balancer. Multiple A rows can round-robin. A records point at addresses, not at other hostnames (that is CNAME). At the zone apex, many CDNs use ALIAS/ANAME/flattening so the public internet still sees A/AAAA answers even when you “point at” a hostname in the panel.

1) Run the free DNS A checker on the hostname you care about (@ vs www). 2) Confirm at least one IPv4 answers. 3) Compare the live IPs to your host or CDN docs. 4) If empty, check recent DNS edits, registrar lock, and whether you edited the wrong host. 5) If the bare domain is empty or has a CNAME, open the apex / CNAME-at-apex guides next. 6) After any zone edit, re-check—A rows are easy to wipe in panel cleanups.
